Religion in Latvia
The main religion in Latvia is Evangelical Lutheranism with 55.2% of the population, Roman Catholocism following with 24.5%. The Orthodox Church has 9% of the population attending. About 5% of Latvia's citizens are Jewish. The Evangelical Lutheran Church had an estimated 600,000 members in 1956, by 1987 the population shunk to only 25,000 members. Most of Latvia's jews were killed off in World War II and only few are left. By 1994 there were only 819 religious congregations, 291 were Lutheran, 192 Roman Catholic, 100 Orthodox, 56 Old Believer, 70 Baptist, 49 Pentecostal, 33 Seventh-Day Adventist, 5 Jewish, 3 Methodist, and 2 Reformed.
