Hi there! I thought I'd talk a little bit about our holidays and traditions here in Iceland. We celebrate many of the same holidays that Americans do. They include New Year's Day, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, and Maundy Thursday. A few of the others are Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Mother's Day, Christmas, and New Year's Eve. A few of the holidays that Americans do not celebrate are Epiphany (June sixth), Ascension, Whit Sunday, and Whit Monday. We have many holidays. We also set aside a couple of days to celebrate Icelandic National Day and Icelandic Language Day. We have some very interesting traditions. We call everybody by their first names, including the adults. It may seem peculiar to some of you Americans, but it is true! The only people here in Iceland that are treated with special respect are the Bishop of Iceland and the President of Iceland. One sign of respect that we prefer to exhibit is the act of taking off our shoes in the hall of a person's house before we enter. We typically dress casually; I love to wear my old, comfortable blue jeans. However, we always dress formally for special occasions, which end at about 11:30 pm. I'll talk to you later!
