Italy's Spirituality
Giovanni here. I had to go to a cathedral Sunday. I am Roman Catholic. Other Italians are as well (well you probably would of already known, I mean, it's not like I am the only one). Although the Catholic faith has a major influence on Italian culture and civic life, only about a third of Italians go to Sunday Mass regularly. History has it that Christianity came to Rome about 10 years after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In the early years, Christians were persecuted by the Romans, but eventually Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages the pope ruled an influential state in central Italy. Rome then became the centre of the Catholic world and a place of pilgrimage.
